Word Power organise a radical Edinburgh Book Fringe alongside the Edinburgh Festivals each August. Word Power Books has published a number of releases by Scottish writers, including, James Kelman, Tom Leonard and National Collective. ![]() In February 2017 Henry announced that she was stepping down "for personal reasons rather than the market" and was looking to sell the shop, leaving its future unclear. Since opening it has gained a reputation for supporting non-mainstream writers and ideas. After Womanzone closed in 1986 Henry felt there was still a need for a radical bookshop in Edinburgh and so began working towards establishing Word Power. in the 1980s Henry had worked in a feminist bookshop in Edinburgh named 'Womanzone'. Reading from a young age has been shown to provide many benefits including greater development of a child’s imagination, concentration levels, linguistic ability and self-confidence. The scheme was launched in recognition of the fact that many children from low socio-economic households have little access to books. Seventy SVP conferences across Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow participated in the scheme, which saw SVP volunteers distributing books to families with children during home visitations.Ī total of 1,493 book packs were distributed to families, and around 3,054 children received brand new books as a result of the scheme.
